Maverick Software Consulting is at the center of an award-winning academic-corporate partnership that employs computer science students to develop and test software for companies such as Thomson Reuters and Digital River.

Maverick also is the bearer of some rather promising news on the job front: According to founder Martin Hebig, all 150 of the students who have worked at Maverick since the program started in 2006 have been hired to full-time positions at companies including Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft and IBM. Many have received multiple offers months before they graduate, said Hebig, the company's president and majority owner.

Decked out in matching shirts emblazoned with their company logo, the computer techies behind Maverick Software Consulting don't look the part of rebels.

Their business model, however, relies on persuading corporate clients to break with custom and trust some of their computer programming work to students. By providing low-cost labor to companies, Maverick Software aims to position itself as an alternative to moving the work to India and China.

There is a local, regional, and national misperception of the computer programming industry. The mistaken conclusion is that the majority of computer programming jobs are being sent offshore and are no longer being performed in the U.S. and, more specifically, within our region.

This is a misperception. Offshore outsourcing once was used to enhance an organization’s staffing by hiring low-cost resources in India, Canada, Ireland, China and Russia. Language, time zone and offshore staff turnover have been impediments to this strategy.
